Blank Laptop Screen…?

I sometimes close my laptop now and again instead of turning it off properly (this puts it on standby – I’d assume it’s okay to do this), and earlier today I closed it and when I came back to it and opened it, the screen wouldn’t turn on. I tried turning the laptop off (via holding the power button) and on again, but it still wouldn’t come on. The screen works fine in Safe Mode, but if I try to start it up normally I get nothing (not even a backlight, so it’s as if it the laptop isn’t on at all). Judging from the fact that I can still hear the logon sound when I start it normally, it seems like the computer itself is starting up okay. I downloaded a new driver for my graphics card from my other PC and installed it on my laptop in safe mode, but it’s still not working. I’m not great with computers, so I can’t think of anything else to try (I heard a system restore might work but that option doesn’t seem to be available in safe mode).
My laptop’s screen has always flickered a little when I first started it up (usually with the mouse still visible during the flickers and the backlight still on), but I thought nothing of it. Now just before the screen goes blank when I start it up, it flickers white a few times before going off. I don’t seem to be able to change the refresh rate in Safe Mode either. And as far as I know I’m running on the correct resolution.
I’m on an HP Compaq Prescario CQ50 laptop running Vista 32-bit with an Nvidia GeForce 8200 M G

I kinda had this problem with my Dell Inspiron B130. I always did control+alt+Delete and waited a few minutes and it usually worked. On my Acer Aspire One you can press Function (Fn)+F6 and it turns on and off the backlight. Hope this helps. But also, it could just be that you bought a Compaq.
