If this is a brand new purchase, Return it as defective. All drivers and devices installed at purchase should be working and functional.
If this is a recent purchase, Resotre it to Original with the Recovery CD.
If that is not an Option, you should also have a Recovery option for OS and original Programs only - Software Recovery.

Go to system devices and find the soundcard. Delete it. Restart your computer and let the computer detect and re-install the sound card. The chances are it will find the right driver for you - allow it to go onto internet if necessary and get a driver (although it probably won't be needed since it will find the one on C drive.)

Most laptop companies have a utility that can identify it's products. If it is a HP product run that online utility and it should bring up all the specific drivers that are meant for that laptop. Also, sometimes the audio device may have been disabled in the bios... so check the bios to make sure that it wasn't accidentally disabled.
Hope that helps!
